Allergic reactions that last all year round are usually caused by indoor mould that remains undetected and a constant risk to your health. Besides causing problems such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and inflammation of the eyes, mould can lead to mould poisoning and fungal infection. Additionally, mould can cause lasting damage to physical property like houses, for example when spores penetrate and rot wood.
Unless it is identified early and effectively managed, mould can compromise air quality and human health, and leave you with thousands of dollars in property damage. Clearly, mould is more costly if ignored than if it is actively tackled.
Mould spores thrive in moist conditions and may be found in the air, in fluids, on foods that are left unattended, and on a variety of surfaces. All environments—homes, schools, offices, hospitals and agricultural premises—are susceptible. Even after cleaning away mould, you need to take steps to test the air quality in your home to be sure that your family’s health is not at risk.
It is critical to ascertain that indoor air is of good quality, especially in homes. Although various testing options are available, you are cautioned that not all of them are reliable. For example, air quality test kits that employ a petri dish that traps dust and spores as they fall should not be used.
Implications on type and quantity of air mould
There are various types of indoor mould. Susceptibility to mould spores (usually presenting in the form of allergies, poisoning symptoms or fungal infection) differs among individuals. Type and quantity of mould, as well as individual differences, all have a bearing on whether a person becomes sick. The best safeguard is to have the mould removed. Importantly, ensure that you know what type of mould your home is infested with, and how much is in the air.
To test the air quality in your home:
- Rent a professional air-quality testing pump;
- Collect the air samples yourself. You can test the air in your home using the same equipment that professionals use. The video below shows you the steps;
- Send the air samples to the Mold & Bacteria Consulting Laboratories for analysis.
How Much Does It Cost?
The basic mould testing package costs $182 (plus tax) and includes the following:
- Rental of air-sampling pump (1 day rental only);
- 2 FREE cassettes, 1 for indoor air sample and the other for outdoor sample;
- Easy-to-follow air-sampling instructions;
- Analysis of samples by a recognized laboratory with a turn-around time of 48 working hours;
- Laboratory report with results interpretation;
- FREE on-phone, 15-minute professional consultation to help you decide if further investigation and/or remedial action is necessary.
Note that each additional sample will cost $66.50 plus tax.
How many samples should you collect?
The basic package comes with 2 air-sampling cassettes. This enables you to take 1 sample indoors and a sample outdoors. (The outdoor sample is called “control,” and is used for scientific comparison.) Each room to be tested requires 1 separate cassette. Thus, if you are testing 5 separate rooms, you require 6 cassettes—one being for the control (outdoor) sample.
