Mildew smell in the bathroom, shower areas and basement is very common in old homes although occasionally it can also be a problem in new homes. The constant damp conditions in the bathroom, shower areas and basement provide the perfect environment for the growth of mildew. Mildew that is actively growing on damp surfaces produce odors, giving homes the “old house” musty smells. At some points it can be quite strong, and at others it is barely detected at all. The mildew smell may come and go depending on whether the mildew was still actively growing.
How to prevent mildew smell
Mildew smell in the bathroom is often embarrassing, unpleasant and unhealthy. Since we know the cause of the smell, we can prevent it. Mildew growth is due to moisture availability. Therefore by eliminating moisture, we can eliminate mildew growth and hence get rid of mildew smell. Regular shower stall and basement maintenance helps to control the growth of mildew in these areas. For example, after showering, the shower curtains should be spread out across the rod to allow proper air circulation for faster drying. Rubber mats should be removed from the bottom of the bath tub and allowed to dry thoroughly in between uses. Shower tiles and grout should be cleaned and dried with a cloth regularly to prevent mildew buildup. Curtains and windows should be opened frequently to allow light and air in to help kill mildew spores. As for the basement, a dehumidifier should be installed to reduce humidity.
